I get the impression that Marco and his mate David weren't incredibly impressed by the Wolds inn at Huggate. Back in the day, it served the best steak in East Yorkshire and probably in North Yorkshire, too. It was a worthy recipient of the Yorkshire Evening Press's 1991 pub of the year honour. I think I may have the solution to the mystery of the unsigned certificate. Knowing your journalist friend, as I do, I suspect he was unable to write after a heavy, alcohol-laden night out at the award-winning pub.
Thanks for the vicarious wander into the wilds of the Yorkshire Wolds. I would like to visit this area one day. The hike would most likely be beyond my capacity (especially in a driving rain!), but a meal at that inn would be most welcome!
Oh all over...the Surrey hills, North and South downs, Peak district, Lake district, Dartmoor...the strange old cathedrals, the posh people walking their dogs, the pubs(!), walking in England is a gift that just keeps giving! Surrey and Sussex were easily accessible from London so that's where I went the most. Do you have some favourite walks?
You're so right about walking in England. It really is a gift. Loads of walks that we love from the Thames Path, Seven Sisters White Cliffs from Seaford to Eastbourne, South West Coastal Path in Northern Cornwall, Hadrian's Wall in the far north, the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District.
A memorable hike, indeed, though you omitted to mention The Wolds Inn's Famers' Wives calendar, with said subjects kitted out in flat caps and wellies, but very little else, displaying their Purdeys and Berettas to fine effect.
Dear Monty, Maisie and Aggie now all sadly departed too... 😢

Mmm. Perhaps!
Trust me, Marco, I know what I'm talking about!
Never doubted it for one moment, Bertie!

So much beautiful countryside to explore in Yprkshire, Ruth. Let us know when you are coming!
Ah, I’d love to come! Perhaps in the next year or two. Definitely craving a visit to your little island!
Aw took me right back to my saunters in the English countryside. Lovely post!
Great to hear. Where did you saunter to?

Finally a place I know and recognise.
Incredible scenery and ghastly weather is the norm.
Too true, Amelia!

Haha! Modesty forbade, David!
